About Kathy McHenry
While working in the corporate world, I held several different positions with different businesses throughout my 25-year career. From a Telecommunications Coordinator to Executive Assistant to Legal Assistant. As diverse as each career path was, they all had something in common: the need to update their systems to incorporate computers. Yes, I was weaving my way through different industries as desktop computers were making their way onto the scene. I quickly found that as soon as the set up and challenge of a new job were over, so was my interest.
In 2001, at home on my own computer, I began researching ways to incorporate my wide variety of experience in different industries, while honing my computer skills. Coming from a family built on entrepreneurship, the thought of branching out on my own was not unusual; it was my choice of business that had a lot of people wondering.
Virtual Assistants (VA’s) was new term among the business world. VA’s come from a variety of business backgrounds, but most have several years administrative experience earned in the “real” (non-virtual) business world. This was RIGHT UP MY ALLY! But of course, to be successful in any business, you must be able to grow, learn, accept change, possess good leadership, organizational and time management skills, as well as have the drive to succeed at any cost.
Serious consideration and research went into how I could operate online and maintain a high standard of work. In 2002, Your Virtual Advantage (YVA). was born.
My team has grown since I first started in my tiny den/office, in my Northern Virginia apartment that I shared with my husband and two daughters. We have been successful in providing business support and consulting services to entrepreneurs and small businesses. In addition to that, I’ve mentored over 15 aspiring virtual assistants.
Starting and staying consistent in business isn’t something that happens overnight. It’s constantly learning, growing, and staying competitive.
Because we possess the ability to change direction to accommodate the ever changing landscape of business ownership, have managed to not only survive the recession, but with our diverse client base, surpass yearly goals and expectations.
I’ll never regret my jump into entrepreneurship and always encourage others to do the same if it’s what their heart is telling them to do.
